Use Your Cheap Webcam As A Home Surveillance Camera

Do you want to stay in touch with your living room while at work? Aah.. You want to perpetrate James Bond’s style and boast to your barkada that you can be like him. No matter what your intentions are, this short guide will help your fantasies come true!

The tools of the trade:

You need a computer with broadband internet connection at home.

A webcam (any brand will do)

Webcam2000 as our free webcam image server

Web browser (IE, Firefox, Opera, etc.)

But before we proceed..You need to check first if the following things are in order.

- Open ports 8000 or 8080 on your software firewall or router.
- Check your webcam

Let’s begin spying

1. Download and extract the webcam image server wc2k1_67.zip

2. Open Webcam2000.exe

3. Go to Video menu and select a video adapter

4. Go to Options and select Web Server… then enable the settings as seen below

You can set Image server listen port to 8080 or 8000 and set the Refresh rate in seconds to your liking. You can also set a password if you like.

5. Set the following settings

View Preview - Check to show a realtime preview of your cam
Enable Web Server - Check to enable your webcam server
Live - Uncheck this to stop the streaming of images but server is still active

6. Open your browser to view your webcam images streamed by the webcam server.

There you have it! You can now monitor your living room when at work or when you are having a vacation. But ofcourse, you need to leave your computer on while you’re away.
