I just found this tweak on the web. They said it has something to do with cutting down Firefox’s memory caching in order to make the browser more stable in times of heavy use.

change the value of this preference name from -1 to 5

browser.sessionhistory.max_total_viewers

effect:
makes Firefox more stable
improves “the go back and go forward” rendering of pages

This is what I do right after I installed AVG

First I changed the control center’s view mode from standard to reduce mode
for easy viewing.

Next, I started to configure its components

AVG Resident Shield - There are few options of this component that AVG does not enable by default.

Here they are:

Under Properties

Change “scan infected files” to “scan all files”
Check “on close scanning”

Scheduler - I hate this part. I personally dont like to set any scheduled tasks and I just dont know why. So dont bother asking me. Its up to you if your going to keep this or not. In my case I disabled it.

Shell Extention - There are good options here that needs to be enabled.

Under Properties

Check Scan system areas before the test starts
Check scan inside archives
Check scan all files

Virus Vault - Its here where the nasty stuff resides.

Open the virus vault and press F8

uncheck the “limit the size of the virus vault”

Setting a limit size is a risk your going to take if a contamination occurs. When a virus spreads itself and infecting files more than the capacity of the virus vault, excess infected files will no longer be quarantined, making the contamination a disaster.

So you want to clean up the trash for the day but don’t know where and how to begin?

No worries!

All you have to do is fire up your Control Panel and go to Add or Remove Programs.
Located on the upper-right corner of the window is an option named “sort by”.
Just click the drop-down menu and choose “frequency of use”. Then your files
will be sorted out according to its frequency of usage.

Entries are then labeled as:

Entries with no label - In most cases, this one is the most commonly use among the list

Use Occasionally - This items are accessed or modified only when needed.

Use Rarely - this is our target. The usual junk programs left behind belongs to this list.

Just like that. A plain and simple house cleaning for mom, dad or even for grandpa’s pc.

Heres a simple way to hide your serial numbers, passwords, phone numbers and everyday notes in a safe place. Your informations will be encrypted using a password and the most modern AES 256bit encryption technology.

Step 1

Just download this file. No installation required
Download LockNote
File Type: exe
File Size: 300kb

to encrypt an existing text file simply drag and drop existing text files on a LockNote window: they will be encrypted automatically. you can also do it by dragging the text file on Locknotes exe file.

Step 2

right-click the encrypted text file and change its file attribute to “hidden”. But be sure to set the folders view option to “do not show hidden files and folders”

Why bother with cleaning softwares when they don’t clean the other parts of your computer that holds too much junk?

why not make one to suit your needs?

Heres a simple way to customize your own cleaning tool.

1. Create a new text document

2. Add the ff entries (you can change the target according to your needs as long as you retain the RD /S /q)

RD /S /q “C:\DOCUME~1\Common\LOCALS~1\Temp”

RD /S /q “C:\Program Files\Mirc\logs”

RD /S /q “C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Cache”

3. Save as yourfilename.bat (be sure to save it as MS-DOS Batch file or else it wont work)

4. double click the file and thats it!

Tip: create a desktop shortcut so you can change the icon to make it more presentable.

Golden Rule #1

1. Simplicity Is Security

The more we keep things simple the more secured we are and the lesser chance we become vulnerable.

Do not go into an “install frenzy mode”. Nowadays, with the growing popularity of the internet, it is not hard to find something that will suit your needs without the need to save a hardcopy in your computer. So, stop worrying about “i need to save a copy of this or that”. What you can do instead is bookmark the source and go back later when the need arises.
Start with a checklist and try to focus your mind on things that matters most. A good way to start is through classification.
Divide all your softwares into categories.

System

Security

Cleaning

Office/Documents

Multimedia

2. Be a minimalist

Do not overload your computer with useless stuff that runs redundant tasks. For example, instead of having two media players, why not keep an all-in-one solution.

By doing this, not only you can save a huge chunk of hard disk space, you can also minimize your chance of acquiring lots of spywares.

Golden Rule #2

Use only those legitimate software and be sure to download it from legitimate source/s.

How do we know it is legitimate?

Read reviews

Join forum discussion

Ask a close friend

Who are this legitimate source/s?

The company or the authors Official Website

Trusted file hosting websites like Download.com and Sourceforge.net

Golden Rule #3

Update, Upate Update!

Theres no better than a brand new piece of software with the latest updates installed. This can also save you from a lot of trouble.

It is recommended to run a clean install of everything you want to update. Clean install is the process of removing first an old software before installing a new one.

Golden Rule #4

DO NOT EXPERIMENT NOT UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING, AND YOU ARE AWARE OF THE RISKS AND THE POSSIBLE DRAWBACKS OF YOUR ACTIONS.

Golden Rule #5

Avoid Pirated/cracked copies that can be found on the web. This “warez” are often maliciously modified by malicious individuals who doesn’t have the decency of owning it legally.
Why need to use a pirated software if a newer opensource software nowadays can do as much task a paid software is capable of or even better.

Use legal alternatives if you can’t afford to buy a paid software rather than using a pirated copy which can make you look cheap.

This is one of my original tweaks for the greatest browser on Earth.

I notice this RSS feed lurking on my toolbar right next to “Getting Started” and I thought this may take some of my bandwidth from just loading the news. So what I did was I disabled it.

Step 1: right-click “Latest Headlines”
live

Step 2: from the drop down menu, select “Delete”

Keep those nasty malwares/spywares away from your precious b0x without the hassle of using anti-intrusion tools by following this two simple steps:

1. Create a new user profile with limited system priviledge and use this as your main surfing hub.

In case of a system breach, this will isolate the problem thus ensuring your system files remains safe. You can safely fix the problem or delete and recreate a new and a clean one without the need to defrag or reinstall your whole OS.

2. Apply the Sandbox technology

Run Firefox within sandbox envi. to block those killer codes from ever reaching your b0x. You can do this by installing VMware bundled with Firefox

Run instant messengers within sandbox envi. to block the spread of IM worms and trojans. You can do this by installing the more flexible Sandboxie
