56K Modem Tweak In Windows XP

How to get the most out of your 56K modem?

I posted this guide hoping to help those people juice up their modem for them to add extra throughput while online.

Find a way to maximize your “Maximum Transfer Unit” (MTU) depending on your ISP. im using TCP Optimizer to do that, its a free TCP tweaking tool (obviously). You will see improvements once u have it set properly.

what else?

under control panel go to your network connections and go to your default connection or any dial-up connection your using. right-click properties , under the “networking” tab uninstall all the protocols EXCEPT “Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and your personal firewall protocol (if ever there is one installed). Then click “OK” WHY DO THIS? To save resources.

Next

Still under the control panel go to your network connections and go to your default connection or any dial-up connection your using. right-click properties , under the “networking” tab, select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) then click the “Properties”. Under the “General” tab click the “Advance” button then go to the “WINS” tab, from there untick the “Enable LMHOSTS lookup”.

Next

Still under the control panel window go to “Phone and Modem Options” once you are there, go to “modems” tab select the modem you are using, then click “properties”. Under your modem properties go to “advance” tab then add this extra initialization commands:

&K3S10=30S11=20S15=127S27=4S32=130

Before we proceed, mind you, use this command at your own risk.

Next

Still under your modem properties, go to “Power Management” tab then untick “allow this device to bring the computer out of standby”.

Lastly

Download a free , light , and robust download manager. In my case im using “Flashget

This set of tweaks works right for me. In your case, use at your own risk. Don’t blame me for sudden BSOD’s. There are different computer setups. thus, results may vary.
